How to Reduce Risk for CVD.

Cardiovascular Disease

What is it?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cardiovascular disease (CVD) refers to “a group of disorders of the heart and blood vessels.” These diseases include cerebrovascular disease, coronary heart disease, and rheumatic heart disease. Additionally, a majority of cardiovascular diseases deaths are due to stroke and heart attack, specifically, 4 out of 5 deaths.

How can I reduce my risk?

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), to reduce the risk for heart disease and stroke, maintain a healthy diet, stop smoking, reduce stress, and increase physical activity. The organization, GirlTrek, can aid in increasing physical activity. GirlTrek aims to “Pioneer a health movement for African-American women and girls grounded in civil rights history and principles through walking campaigns, community leadership, and health advocacy.” Specifically, the organization encourages Black women and girls to walk at least 30 minutes a day to reduce heart disease and stroke risks significantly.
