My name is Gabrielle Battle and I am a proud Oakland native. I am 19 years old and I am currently a public policy major at Duke University. I have always been deeply passionate about exploring the ways in which community-based programs can be combined with policy to facilitate change for Black girls. I originally created my research project, Just-Us: Young Black Women’s Perspectives on Justice, Inequality, and Liberation, as a result of the country’s clear neglect of the stories and experiences of Black girls. However, despite what the outside world says, I believe that our lives, voices, and experiences matter. We deserve to be loved, protected, and celebrated. I created this initiative because I never want another Black girl to feel alone in her experience as she tries to navigate a world that often tries to tear her down. I want her to know that even if she is halfway across the country, she can find an online space to feel protected, loved, and free. I hope through this initiative, Black girls feel seen, heard, represented, celebrated, and loved. I created this initiative out of my radical love for us.
