How to Reduce Risk for HIV.

Human Immunodeficiency Virus

What is it?

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), HIV or human immunodeficiency virus is “a virus that attacks the body’s immune system.” If left untreated, HIV can develop into AIDS or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). Also, in 2010, Black women accounted for 64% of new HIV infections, and HIV being the 3rd ranked cause of death for Black women between the ages of 35-44. Interestingly, most of these Black women acquired HIV from unprotected sex with men.

How can I reduce my risk?

To reduce the probability of being infected or infecting others, wear a latex condom during any type of sex. Additionally, the only reputable way to know if you do or do not have HIV is to get tested, especially before entering into a new sexually active situation. Additionally, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) recommends that newly pregnant women be tested for HIV, no matter their risk level, as prenatal care can help birth HIV-negative babies, even with HIV-positive mothers.
